" The waterfall furniture style gained immense popularity during the 1930s and 1940s, emerging as a prominent expression of Art Deco design in American homes. Characterized by rounded, smoothly curved edges. that resembled cascading water, these pieces were mass-produced using advanced plywood-bending techniques and exotic wood veneers. Manufacturers such as the Mengel Company and various Grand Rapids furniture makers capitalized on the public's desire for sleek, modern bedroom sets.
Crafted typically from walnut, maple, or mahogany veneers over solid core woods, waterfall furniture often featured intricate marquetry, book-matched veneer patterns, and contrasting light and dark wood banding. Lucite, Bakelite, and brass-plated hardware added a glamorous touch that defined the Hollywood Regency aesthetic of the period. Today, these surviving suites represent a distinct era of mid-century domestic design that prioritized smooth, continuous lines and streamlined elegance".
